Inked Flower Power

I was asked to create a piece of art for the “Night of Hope” event put on by MDA for the live auction portion of the night. The theme for the 2015 event was “The 60’s” so I wanted to do something that fit within that theme. I looked at a lot of different images on google for inspiration and since the 60’s were a time of “flower power” and tie-dye, I decided to combine the two into a singular piece for the event. I was also inspired by graphic art prints and decided to try to recreate that style as well.

I painted the background sunburst tie-dye with watercolors and then I inked the flower image over the top utilizing the brush pens from a set of Copic multiliners.

It was definitely a larger piece than I’m used to working on (18”x24”), but then again, pretty much anything over the size of an 11”x14” piece is going to be larger than what I’m used to working on. I had a difficult time seeing the “bigger picture” as I was working on this due to its “larger than normal” size. Since I was looking at the smaller sections as I was working on it, I had to take a step back from it to really appreciate it as a whole. In the end, I began to like it a lot more than I did when I was in the middle of working on it and think it turned out better than I originally thought it did!

If I remember correctly the piece ended up raising $900 for MDA, which was pretty awesome, even if there were weird “hiccups” during the auction itself. (Like the auctioneer attempting to sell it as a different piece and then the auctioneer and MC butchering my last name…*facepalm*)
