Subject: Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer AKA A.T.O.M. from Arrow
Size: 8”x10”
Medium: Coffee
Event: Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) 2015

Each coffee portrait is first sketched in pencil using a photo reference. Once the portrait has been sketched, it is lightly inked with either black Staedtler pigment liners or black Microns. After inking, the pencil is then erased and the portrait is completed with coffee. Utilizing instant coffee, different tones and depths of color can be achieved to create warm sepia toned portraits.

Note: So, this is an interesting one. I finished this portrait just after finishing Hayley Atwell's portrait in preparation for ECCC. Brandon Routh was scheduled to appear at the convention all three days and had even agreed to do a special screening of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" in which he appeared as the vegan superpowered evil ex-boyfriend of Ramona Flowers, after which he was to do a Q&A with the audience. Days before the con however, it was announced that he was no longer able to attend due to an overseas filming engagement. I had already finished the portrait and nearly cried when I found out he was no longer attending. In an apology video he stated that he would do everything he could to attend the con next year, so I guess I have a portrait done well in advance of a con for once. Maybe I'll even do another portrait if I'm feeling up to it.
