Description

A piece of origami star art I created in preparation for the Super Bowl earlier this year. Any guesses as to who I was rooting for in the big game? Even though they didn’t win, I still believe in my Seahawks and can’t wait to see what they do in the upcoming season. #GoHawks!

I donated this piece to a charity art auction to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Since I knew there were quite a few Seahawks fans at the convention the auction was being held at, I hoped that it would do well. I was pleasantly surprised that this piece ended up selling for an incredible $1250.

How it’s made:

I sketched out letter templates on graph paper, with the intention that each square would equal one star once it was to the correct size. I then inked out those outlined letter templates and scanned them onto my computer, where I took out any stray lines and sized them properly. Once they were set, I printed out the letter templates and glued them to a thin cardboard. I had picked up a burlap canvas at the store which had the center portion prepared with what I think is several layers of gesso. I liked the ragged edge border it left, but wanted the backdrop for the letters to be the Navy blue of the Seahawks so I painted several coats of the blue I wanted over the prepared center of the burlap canvas. Once the glue had dried on the letter templates, I cut them out and glued them down to the canvas, weighting them as they dried. After that, it was time to glue the stars I had already folded and varnished in preparation for the project. A little touch up paint and a signature completed the piece which measures 12”x36” (canvas dimensions).
